home hath frozen over. february 4, twenty eleven

Home Sweet Home – Harlingen, TX.

For those that don’t know, Harlingen is in South Texas (map). Only 30 minutes, if that, from the Mexican border. And it usually stays pretty warm here, generally 70+ degrees. In fact, when the temperature drops below 50 degrees, many people freak out, bundle up like they live in Alaska, and prepare for blizzard-like weather.

Much like the rest of Texas, Harlingen has been experiencing “winter-like” conditions. Temperatures have been below 35 degrees for the last couple of days, and we even got “snow” on Thursday. Yes, I use the term “snow” loosely because it was only a few flurries here and there; but to many residents here that have never seen snow, it may as well have been 10+ inches.

This morning, with threats of icy rain and below-freezing temps the night before, I woke up to see what looked like a scene out of some b-rated Christmas cartoon….everything, I mean EVERYTHING, was caked in a nice layer of ice. Not wasting much time, I threw on a sweatshirt, some gloves, and grabbed my camera.

Now, if I was still in Lubbock, this weather really wouldn’t be much to get excited over; but down here, it’s once-in-a-lifetime type weather (for most people at least).

So here are a few of the shots I took, enjoy:

"playing with shallow DOF; the ice is a combination of what was on the ground, and what had fallen from the trees"

    Excellent shots!

  1. Excellent shot. Stay warm down there.

  2. Beautiful shots! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been feeling a little uninspired recently, and this definitely helped! Hope everything’s going great down there in South Texas.

  3. Glad to see you post som photos again!

I especially like the two shots with the palm tree. A frozen palm tree, now that’s a contrast.
