Day 21/365…just another snow photo…january 29, 2010

So today, Alison and myself went on a little photo adventure. We were talking about things to shoot and she mentioned she has a nice glass vase…in the shape of a human head. She wanted to take some photos of it with a fish inside. This is where our adventure begins…Alison setup a shoot at Mr. Aquarium – they let us use a fish for a model in Alison’s vase – and we took a few shots using flashes placed at various angles. I got some pretty cool shots from that – we both used some of the other tanks as backgrounds – but I wanted to try some other things using the head vase. I had an idea for a shot, so we went to a different site. Never did try the idea – yet! – but I got this instead…

I took a few more like this, but this was one that really focused on the vase. I was laying on my stomach in the snow (which was very cold) and used live view to compose my shots; however, I did not focus using live view, so I ended up with a bunch of shots focusing on different areas. I also had Alison hold up a gold reflector and I popped two Canon 580EX II flashes into it in an attempt to get a goldish highlight on the vase. It didn’t work like I intended, but did add some light on the cross closest to the head vase.

Shot with Canon 5DMK2 and 35 1.4L lens.

ISO 50, 35mm, f4.0 @ 1/2000 sec. Edited with Adobe Lightroom 2.6.

  1. Such a fun shoot! This is so haunting… Love it.

I hope you’ll link to her other blog (she mentioned it in her 365 entry) when she posts the rest of the pictures…I’m curious to see what else you and she got.

This is a great picture! Haunting and whimsical and comical all at once. Good Work!
